Southern Baltic coastal biodiversity

dune habitat restoration and development of good management practices

Why is this project so important?

The conservation status of coastal dune habitats on the southern Baltic coast is unsatisfactory (U2) and continues to deteriorate. Due to increasing anthropogenic pressure and climate change, the situation will continue to deteriorate, and the spread of invasive species is changing the structure of white and gray dune communities. Without immediate action, the resources of these unique habitats will be severely limited in the future.

Project objective:

To improve the conservation status of key dune habitats and develop sustainable tools for their further protection along the entire 242-kilometer Polish section of the Baltic Sea coast, and ultimately along the entire southern coast.

This will enable the dunes to better protect both nature and us from the effects of storms and erosion.

Funding and budget structure of the project

The LIFE for Dunes PL project is implemented under the European Union’s LIFE Program, the EU’s largest financial instrument dedicated to environmental and climate projects. The total budget for the project is €12,841,723.39, making it one of the largest renaturation projects on the Polish coast.

The financing model reflects the international nature of environmental challenges in Europe, where effective protection of dunes requires coordinated action across national borders. The co-financing structure is based on a model of joint participation of European Union funds and national support from project partners:

Euro 8 603 950
European Union grant
The largest part of the budget—67%, or €8,603,950—comes from direct funding from Programu LIFE subprogram: Nature and Biodiversity sub-programme. This amount covers the costs of renaturation activities, scientific research, multifaceted environmental monitoring, and educational campaigns carried out in all three partner countries.
Euro 2 388 929

Polish contribution - NFOŚiGW

The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management provides national co-financing in the amount of EUR 2,388,929 (PLN 10,303,453). These funds come from the priority co-financing program of the LIFE Program and are intended for the implementation of measures in Polish areas, covering six Natura 2000 sites along our coastline.
Euro 1 049 059,86
The Lithuanian Ministry is contributing €1,049,059.86 to the project, financing renaturation activities in two Natura 2000 areas in Lithuania, including work on the prestigious Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Project partners

The project is being implemented by an international consortium consisting of nine main partners and four associated partners from Poland, Germany, and Lithuania.

Projekt LIFE for Dunes to przełomowe przedsięwzięcie łączące renaturyzację z nowoczesną nauką.
